CAPITAL LEAGUE
MATCHDAY 11
Saturday 18th June 2016
ANU FC stretched their lead at the top of the Capital League table to eleven points on another weekend of pulsating action in the Capital League. The students’ relentless pursuit of the league title took another massive swing in their favour on a day in which closest challengers Queanbeyan City were beaten for the fifth time this season and saw themselves swallowed by a congested pack chasing top four honours.
Goals from Alex Ollman, Jonathan Scott and a ninth of the season from Golden Boot leader Danny Krajacic saw ANU FC to a 3-1 win over Tuggeranong United on a difficult playing surface at Kambah. The visiting team were never really threatened in the sense of losing the points despite a well taken goal by Carl Hynes for the home team.
Canberra Olympic have surged through the field to lock in third place after recording a 3-1 away win over Queanbeyan City at the Riverside Stadium. Olympic, on the weekend in which their first grade side claimed a place in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32, claimed the scalp of City thanks to a brace of goals from Richard Santiago, added to a strike by Christopher Naoumidis. Nik Noveski managed to get a goal back for City who has fallen to fourth in the pecking order.
White Eagles reclaimed second place by seeing off Narrabundah by a narrow 2-1 scoreline at Woden Park. A penalty from Thai Tran, added to by a goal from Pepe Varga ultimately proved the difference with the duo now having half a dozen goals each this season. Tam Delacey gave the Bulls hope of a surprise result but the Eagles held on to be worthy winners in a tight contest.
Weston-Molonglo FC lost some ground on the top clubs with a 2-1 loss to O’Connor Knights on a swampy surface at Kaleen Enclosed. An own goal, and a strike from Robert Hrstic gave O’Connor their fourth win of the season at the expense of the Magpies for whom PS4 NPL striker Daniel Di-Salvatore netted their consolation.
